The WURST CONTACT Trilogy:
A pastiche of the Space Trilogy of C.S. Lewis, also drawing inspiration from the stories of Robert Anson Heinlein (a supporting character) and Robert Anton Wilson, as well as the music of the Grateful Dead. It takes place in an alternate 1970s, one in which World War II was shorter and less bloody—thanks to an American naval aviator, Admiral Erwin Rommel (who starred in Sourdough Jackson’s previous novel Torpedo Junction).
Into the Noisy Planet, the first volume, begins in 1971 when Admiral Anson McDonald, Chief of Naval Operations and clandestine ufologist, is presented with a pressing UFO problem by John F. Kennedy, the chief of Naval Intelligence. He now faces the challenge of alien contact with entities he thought were shut safely between the covers of mythology books.
His son Ian, an engineer-in-training, faces the same challenge from a totally different angle, and has been contemplating marriage for some time. He then discovers more than he ever wanted to know about his girlfriend, Dyanne Waters, when they have a close encounter of the worst kind with a UFO.
This misadventure leaves the couple with their minds swapped between their bodies. Ian may be walking in Dyanne’s high heels for months, and wonders what it will be like to be a bride.
On the other side of the fence is the Terran Cultural Collection Expedition, which has been working on Earth for millennia while being mistaken for gods. Inanna, one of their number, is tasked with initiating open, public contact with Earth. Since the Expedition is on probation for repeated irregularities, she must accomplish this without irritating what amounts to the Expedition’s parole officer.
